I'm pretty much exhausted. Last night, Masterpiece Theater started their new season of Masterpiece Classic. They were running a new adaptation of Tess of the D'Urbervilles and I wanted to see it. The problem is that it didn't come on until 9:00 p.m. and finish up until almost 11:00 p.m. I really didn't want to stay up that long but we don't have a dvr or Tivo and I can't remember how to tape with a VCR (not even sure if we have a blank tape). [New Year's Resolution: figure out how to tape on vcr or dvd]. Last night they showed part 1 and it concludes next Sunday at the same time.
An 11:00pm bedtime wouldn't have been so bad except that after watching it, I couldn't fall asleep so it was almost 1:00am before I went to bed. If you've read the book or seen a version of the movie, you know it's a pretty sad story. I had done one or the other so I knew the plotline. Without spilling too much, the main character, Tess, has a baby, who only lives a short while. She names him Sorrow. A sweet little baby dying in Tess, coupled with the Friday night episode of Law and Order: SVU that Ned and I watched where a toddler died from Shaken Baby Syndrome and I was feeling a little unsettled. I did, however, eventually fall asleep.
Where has my memory gone? I know that my senior year of high school, we had to read something by Thomas Hardy. I think that it was Return of the Native not Tess. Plus, since it was high school, I'm quite sure I relied quite heavily (if not exclusively) on Cliff's Notes. Thomas Hardy is a real downer. Want to be really depressed? Read Jude the Obscure. I listened to it on books on tape and was depressed for weeks. Anyway, I digress.
Also speaking of Hardy, I really hated my 12th grade English class. When using the word "specifically," my teacher would pronounce it "pacifically." Seriously, an English teacher.
I think being on Facebook has made me think more about high school. Certainly, the majority of my "friends" on it are from my high school days. Or maybe it's the fact that the big 4-0 is looming large. I can't believe I graduated from high school almost 22 years ago. It's crazy.
In other uplifting news:
1) We found out today that the Goth crew tenants who are renting one of our townhomes are totally trashing it.
2) Ned took his swim team and Bear to a new Chinese buffet restaurant in B'burg. I refused to eat there (I'm scared of untested Chinese restaurants) so I had a bowl of Rice Krispies for dinner.
3) Work was so busy that I couldn't make it out to lunch. I found a bag of microwave popcorn to eat but I scorched about half of it.
4) I made up an excuse to go check on the kids at daycare before I went into work. Call it paranoia kicking in.
5) Jack preferred Ned at 5:15 a.m. to me. This has NEVER happened.
6) It's January 5th and I am officially 0 for 6 on my New Year's resolutions. (0 for 7 if you count the one above about learning to record on vcr.).
I think I should go to bed and hope I wake up in a better mood. I can't be pleasant to be around.
Love,
Allie
